她们是美国约200对通过宠物合伙人（PetPartners）注册的辅助治疗宠物猫团队之一。非营利组织宠物合伙人将主人和他们的宠物组成一个志愿者团队，提供动物辅助干预治疗。他们可以去医院、护理机构或学校进行辅助治疗和参加其他活动，以改善社区健康。
宠物合伙人将九个物种注册为辅助治疗动物，它们分别是：狗、猫、马、兔子、豚鼠、老鼠、鸟、迷你猪以及美洲驼和羊驼等。
查斯顿·格里芬研究了猫辅助治疗的影响，她认为这方面还需要进行更多研究。她表示，对其他辅助治疗动物的研究有很多，例如宠物狗，但将猫用于辅助治疗经常会“令人感到意外”，因为许多人根本不知道它们的存在。
格里芬表示：“当它们进入某个环境的时候，人们会说：‘哇，一只被人牵着的猫。这是怎么回事？’它会启发人们用一种全新的方式进行交流，我们在其他辅助治疗动物干预疗法中从未听说过有人曾经讨论过这种互动方式。”
门格尔表示，她在收养了短毛家猫Lola-Pearl大约一个月后，曾一时兴起带它参加了一次截肢者联盟会议。在那之后，她深信Lola-Pearl会是一只优秀的辅助治疗宠物猫。
门格尔表示：“它与人们相处融洽，所以我知道它会是一只优秀的辅助治疗宠物猫。人们也都被它所吸引。”
最近在参加截肢者互助团体会议时，门格尔用婴儿车推着Lola-Pearl，车上写着“辅助治疗宠物猫”，在它睡醒之后，参会者就可以跟它互动。
门格尔表示：“她对人的直觉很准。”
Lola-Pearl并不是门格尔人生中唯一的一只宠物猫：门格尔曾是一名流动护士，她遭遇了一场几乎致命的车祸，经过多年手术之后还是在2006年失去了左腿。她养了七只猫，其中大多数都有残疾。
她说道：“是它们找到了你，而不是你找到了它们。”
Lola-Pearl被发现的时候只有几周大，它的两条后腿已经完全被缠在了一起。它无法行走，后来被送到了门格尔在密苏里州开动物收容所的一位朋友那里，但那里的兽医也无法为它提供帮助。收容所找到了爱荷华州的专家，他们用夹板固定了Lola-Pearl的两条后腿，试图保住它们，但最终他们决定需要将左后腿截肢。

“Atherapyanimalisananimalwho’sbeenassessedbasedontheirabilitytomeetnewpeopleandnotjusttoleratetheinteraction,butactivelyenjoyit,”saidTaylorChastainGriffin,thenationaldirectorofanimal-assistedinterventionsadvancementattheorganization.
PetPartnersregistersninedifferentspeciesastherapyanimals:dogs,cats,horses,rabbits,guineapigs,rats,birds,minipigs,andllamasandalpacas.
Aspartofherresearch,ChastainGriffinstudiestheimpactoftherapycatsandarguesmoreresearchneedstobedone.There’sabundantresearchonothertherapyanimalslikedogs,shesaid,butthere’softena“shockfactor”involvedwiththerapycatsbecausemanydon’tknowtheyexist.
“Theygointoasettingandpeoplearelike,‘Whoa,there’sacatonaleash.What’shappening’”ChastainGriffinsaid.“Itkindofinspirespeopletoconnectinawaywehaven’ttraditionallyheardtalkedaboutinothertherapyanimalinterventions.”
MengelsaidsheknewLola-Pearlwouldbeagoodtherapycataftershebroughtheronawhimtoanamputeecoalitionconferenceaboutamonthaftersheadoptedthedomesticshorthair.
“ShewassogoodwithpeopleIjustknewshewouldbeagoodtherapycat,”Mengelsaid.“Peoplereallywereattractedtoher,too.”
Duringarecentvisittoalimblosssupportgroupmeeting,MengelpushedLola-Pearlaroundinastroller—labeled“TherapyCat”—soattendeescouldpetthekittyasshewokeupfromanap.
Whethershewassittinginthestroller,walkinginbetweenparticipants’legsorcuddlingontheirlaps,Lola-Pearlbroughtasmiletowhoevershedecidedwasworthyofherattentioninthatmoment.
“She’sveryintuitiveofpeople,”Mengelsaid.
Lola-Pearlisn’ttheonlycatinMengel’slife;theformertravelingnursewholostherleftlegin2006afteryearsofsurgeriesfollowinganear-fatalcaraccidentisamothertosevenfelines,mostofwhichhavedisabilities.
“Theyfindyou,youdon’tfindthem,”shesaid.
Lola-Pearlwasfoundatonlyafewweeksoldwithherbacklegscompletelytwistedtogether.ShewasunabletowalkandbroughttoafriendofMengel’satananimalshelterinMissouri,whereveterinarianscouldnothelpher.TheshelterfoundspecialistsinIowawhowereabletosplintLola-Pearl’slegsasanattempttosavethem,buttheydecidedherlefthindlegneededtobeamputated.
Meanwhile,MengelhadbeenintalkswithherfriendinMissouriaboutadoptingthecat,andafterLola-Pearlhealedfromsurgery,Mengelofficiallyadoptedher.
DespitetheobstaclesMengelhasbeenthrough,sheexudesaspiritofgratitudeforLola-Pearlandfortheworktheydotogether.
“It’sareallyrewardingexperience,”shesaid,“IgetjustasmuchoutofitasthepeoplethatIvisit.”
