“Asamajorresponsiblecountry,Chinaismakingfulleffortstoeliminatefamineacrosstheworld,”saidWangSangui,aprofessorofeconomicsandruraldevelopmentatRenminUniversityofChina.
Wangsaidincreasinginvestmentin,andsupportfor,agricultureisguaranteeingthecountry’sfoodproductiongrowthandmakingChinaamajorsupplieroffoodaidintheworld.
Hesaid2005wasanimportantyear,whentheUnitedNationsWorldFoodProgramofficiallyendedaidtoChina,andthecountryhassinceemergedasoneoftheworld’smajorfoodaiddonors.
ThelatestWFPreport,releasedin2013,showedthatChinaprovided243,000metrictonsoffoodaidin2012,amorethan100percentyear-on-yearincreasethatmadethecountrythefifth-largestdonor,aftertheUnitedStates,Japan,BrazilandCanada.
Chinacontinuescontributingaidtotheworld,mostrecentlyinearlyOctober,whenitprovided$6millioninfoodaidtotheWFPtohelpSierraLeone,LiberiaandGuinea,allhitbytheEbolavirus,accordingtotheMinistryofCommerce.
TheWFPestimatedthat1millionpeopleinthethreecountrieswillsufferfromfoodshortagesinthecomingmonthsbecauseofthedisease.
WangconcededthatChinahasitsownresourcelimitations,buthewasoptimisticaboutconqueringthem.
“EventhoughChinaitselfhasahugepopulation,shrinkingarablelandandwaterscarcity,authoritiesareincreasinginvestmentinandstrengtheningsupporttoagriculturethroughtechnologicalinnovationtomaintainsteadygrowthinfoodproduction,”Wangsaid.
Inthepastfouryears,Chinaplantedhybridrice,withanexpectedyieldof15metrictonsperhectare,in8.7millionhectaresoffarmlandin17provincesandregions,saidTangKe,anofficialofMinistryofAgriculture.
AgricultureMinisterHanChangfunotedinanewsconferencelastyearthatChinafeeds20percentoftheworldpopulationwith9percentoftheworld’sarableland.
“Wearetransformingfromfoodaidreceivertomajorfooddonor,showingourachievementsinagriculture,”Hansaid.
