Threemajoronlinemeal-orderingplatformspledgedtointensifytheiroversightofbusinessesoperatingontheirplatformstowipeoutfoodsafetyproblems.
TangYunhua,deputyheadofBeijingFoodandDrugAdministration,announcedonAugust10thatauthoritieswouldinvestigateallegedviolationsbytheplatforms-waimai.meituan.com,ele.meandwaimai.baidu.com-whichitsaidhadfailedtoinspectcertificationsofhostedbusinessesandmaketheresultspublic.
Theadministrationalsopublishedalistof60restaurantsrunningontheplatformsthatlackpropercertificatesorpermits.Thelistincludedchainrestaurantsownedbypopularbrands,includingtwoXibeirestaurants,whichspecializeindishesfromNorthwestChina,threeKFCrestaurantsandoneSubway.AlltherestaurantsarelocatedinBeijing.
InastatementprovidedtoChinaDailyonAugust11,BaidusaidithassetupaninvestigationteamandsuspendedtheonlinebusinessofalltherestaurantsexposedbytheBeijingFDA.Itsaiditwillconductathoroughinspectionofthoserestaurants,bothonlineandoffline,alongwithareviewofallrestaurantsregisteredontheplatform.
Waimai.baidu.com,Baidu’sonlinemeal-orderingplatform,begandisplayingthecertificationsandsanitaryinformationofallrestaurantsinBeijingthatusetheplatformonAugust10evening,thestatementsaid.
Theinformationtobemadepublicincludesacompany’slicensesandpermits,aswellascertificationofsanitaryconditionsintherestaurantsasgradedbytheBeijingFDA,soconsumerscanmakegooddecisionswhenchoosingonlinerestaurants,itsaid.
Morethan1,000onlinerestaurantsontheplatformwereclosedbytheendofMayaftertheywereinspected,including286registeredinBeijing,thestatementsaid.
WangBicong,afood-safetysupervisoratMeituan,saidonAugust10thatallrestaurantsusingitsonlinemealorderingplatform,waimai.meituan.com,thatwereimproperlyoperatinghavebeenclosed.
Overthepast10months,theplatformhasrefusedregistrationapplicationsfrom74,000businessesacrossChina,andhasclosedmorethan9,000businessontheplatformforfailingtopassinspections,includingnearly2,000businessregisteredinBeijing,Wangsaid.
Ele.mesaidithadclosedallonlinerestaurantsinvolvedinthecaseandwillconductinspectionsoftheplatform,accordingtoareportbynewsportaljiemian.com.
Tang,oftheBeijingFDA,saidtheadministrationwillregularlypublishthenamesofonlinemeal-orderingrestaurantsfoundtohaveviolatedfood-safetyregulations,andallonlinemeal-orderingplatformsthatfailtoinspectthecertificatesofrestaurantsrunningontheirplatformswillbesubjecttothemaximumfine-200,000yuan($30,100),asspecifiedinChina’sFoodSafetyLaw.
Registeredmeal-orderingcustomersinChinareached150millioninJune,accordingtotheChinainternetNetworkInformationCenter.
