两车都不错,但一车必有一处胜出对方。

设计比较

Youcan’tgowrongwitheither,butonehastheedge.
Everyonetalksaboutsedansdying,andthat'strue,buthatchbacksarealsogoingthewayofthedodo.FordkilledtheFocusandFiesta,ChevroletdroppedtheCruze,HondawilllikelygetridoftheFitafterthisyear,andweknowthatVolkswagenhasnoplanstobringthenewbaseGolfstateside.Soasmoremanufacturersshifttosubcompactcrossoversintheirplace,thereareonlyafewgoodfive-doorsleftintheUS.Andthe2020Mazda3andToyotaCorollaHatchbackaretwoofthebest.
We'vedrivenandreviewedthesetwoindividually(theMazda3isactuallyourcurrentlong-termvehicle),andbothofthemscorewellonourratingsystem.Butthisisthefirsttimewe'vepittedthetwoagainsteachother,andwhat'sobviousrightawayisthatthere'snoclearwinner.Bothofthesevehiclesareverygood.
TheMazda3standsoutinafewways–itlooksgood,hasaluxuriouscabin,anddrivesverywell.ButtheCorolladoesmoreofwhatyouwantagoodhatchbacktodo;itdeliversefficiencyandcomfortatamoreaffordableprice.Onlywhenyougetintothenitty-grittydetailsdoesawinneremerge.
Design
Mazda:TheMazda3looksgreat–notjustgreatfortheclass,orjustforahatchback,butgenuinelygreat.Thebrand's“Kodo”designlanguagetranslateswelltothefashionablefive-door,withsharpLEDheadlightsandalargehexagonalgrilleupfrontpairedtoequallysleektaillightsintherear.TheoversizedC-pillaristheonlypointofcontention–anditisthicc–buttheloneelementiseasytooverlookamongsttheotherattractivecues,especiallygivenourtester'sspec.
Theno-costPolymetalGreymetallicpaintjoband10-spokegunmetalgraywheelscreatetheMazda3'sbestlook.Andaddingthe$1,950Appearancepackageblacksoutthefrontairdam,mirrors,sidesills,bumperskirt,andspoilerinanefforttogivethehandsomehatchamoreaggressivelook.Allinall,theMazda3isaneye-catcher.
Toyota:Whilethemassivehoneycombgrille(aToyotastaple)isn'tuniversallyloved,theCorollahatchisstillagood-lookingvehicle.Thehook-shapedheadlightsandtaillightsprovideanicecontrasttotheMazda'ssimple,sleekcues,andthesilverpaintjobwithanaccentingblackroofhelpstheCorollastandout,too.InthesportiestXSEspec,itlooksevenbetter.
OurCorollaHatchbackXSE's10-spokedirectionalwheelsandroof-mountedspoilermakethishatchmuchangrier-lookingthantheMazda–inagoodway.TheCorolla'ssportycuesaddasubtletouchofaggressiontothefive-door'soveralllookandblendseamlesslyintotherestofthevehicle'sshape.ButtheToyota'sboy-racercuesarestillnomatchtotheMazda3'smaturelines.

Mazda:CovertheMazdabadgeonthesteeringwheelandyoumightconvinceusthatthe3'sinteriorbelongstoaluxurycar.It'sthatgood.Theflat,horizontaldashwearsabeautifulmixofredleatherandsoftblackplastic.There'satouchofpianoblackplasticonthecenterconsole,butit'sinoffensive.Allthoseelementslookoutofplace(inagoodway)inahatchback.Thedriverandpassengerseatwearthesamehigh-qualityredleatherasthedash,andthey'resomeofthebestfrontbucketsyou'llfindanywhereintermsofqualityandfeel.
Butpassengerspaceinthefrontseatsandtherearbenchisn'tgreat.FrontlegroomintheMazda3barelygrowsfrom42.2inchesin2018tojust42.3inchesinthismodel,andtherearseatactuallylosesheadroomfrom2018–37.6inchescomparedto35.8inches.Andbothcompartmentsfeelverycrampedforyour6-foot-tallauthor;average-sizedadultswon'tbecomfortableinthebackseatespecially.
Cargoroomsuffersthesamefate.TheMazda3's20.1cubicfeetoftrunkspaceisdownversusthepreviousmodel(20.2inches),itsliftoverheightfeelshighforahatchback,andtheentrywayisextremelynarrow.Whileitmaybefineforgroceries,anythinglargerthanagymbagbarelyfitsinthetrunk.
Toyota:TheCorollaHatchbackisn'tasniceastheMazdainside.TheXSEgetstwo-tone,leather-trimmedseatsandstitchedleatheronthesteeringwheelandshifter…butthat'saboutit.TheToyota'sdashanddoorpanelswearacomboofspongy,rubberizedpleatherandhardplastic–whichisfineuntilyoustepinsidetheMazda.AndtheCorolla'scenterconsolegetsthesamemixoflow-costmaterials.
TheToyotadoesn'thavemuchmoreroomthantheMazdaonpaper,ifany.TheCorollaHatchback's38.4inchesoffrontheadroomjustbeatstheMazda3's38.0inches,whiletheMazda's42.3inchesoffrontlegroomisslightlybetterthantheCorolla's42.0inches.Thesamegoesfortherear;theToyotahasbetterheadroomwhiletheMazdahasbetterlegroomandcargoroom.TheCorolla’sadvantagesareslim,though.
ButwestillprefersittingintheToyota.BecausetheCorollaHatchbackisoneinchtallerthantheMazda,it'salsomuchairier,whichmeanstherearheadroomandlegroomdon’tfeelnearlyastight.Andeventhoughthosevolumefiguresaresimilar,theMazdaisactuallythreeincheslongerthantheToyota,whichmeanstheCorollamakesbetteruseofitsallottedspace.PassengerswillbemorecomfortableintheCorollathantheywilltheMazda,butonlyjust.
AndtheCorolla’sspaciousinteriormakesithardtopickbetweenthetwo–itreallycomesdowntopreference.DoyouwanttheMazda'scrampedbutupscalecabin,orwouldyouprefertheCorollaHatchback'sairyyetcheapinteriorIfwehavetopick,though,theMazda3getsthenod.
Performance
Mazda:PoweringtheMazdaisa2.5-literfour-cylinderenginegoodfor186horsepowerand186pound-feetoftorque,ourtesterutilizingaquick-shiftingsix-speedautomaticversusthebasesix-speedmanual.Andthatsetupsendspowertoallfourwheelsratherthanjustthefrontones,theautomaticbeingtheloneoptionwithall-wheeldrive.OnlytheMazda3andSubaruImprezahaveall-wheeldriveintheclass,andthoughit'sa$1,400option,itgivesthe3anadvantageoverthefront-drive-onlyCorolla.
AndtheMazda3isgreattodrive.Thehatchback'sfour-cylinderhaslotsoflow-endtorque,whichgivesitplentyofpowerofftheline,andthecomboofwell-weightedsteering(ifnotabitheavyinSportmode)andaresponsivesuspensionhelpstheMazda3cornerexceptionallywellfortheclass.Thiscarissomuchfuntoflingaround.
Butthesuspensionisharshandmakesevensmallerdivotsfeellikepotholes.Andalthoughthefour-cylinderengineistorqueydownlow,itlosespowerprettyquicklyandfeelslethargiconthetopend.HighwayspeedsareabitofachorefortheMazda.
Toyota:TheCorollaHatchbackgetsanaturallyaspirated2.0-literenginethat'sgoodfor168horsepowerand151pound-feetoftorque.UnliketheMazda'scrispautomatic,though,theToyotasportsacontinuouslyvariabletransmissionthat'slaggyandwhiny,comparatively.
TheCorollahatchisstillnicetodrive,though.Thefour-cylinderenginedoesn'thaveatonoftorqueoffthelinebutcarriespowerwellthroughthemiddleandupperlimitoftherevrange.Thesteeringislight–probablyatouchtoolight–butquick.ThesuspensionisfirmandkeepstheCorollaprettyflatinthecorners,butliketheMazda,theCorolladoeshavearoughride.AndtheMazda3isstillthesportierandmoresatisfyingtodriveofthetwo.
Technology
Mazda:TheMazda3wasthefirsttogetthebrand'snew8.8-inchinfotainmentsystem,whichnowlivesinnewervehiclesliketheCX-30–andit'sagreatdisplay.Thehomescreeniscleanandeasytonavigatethankstothenewrotarydial,whichhasfourquick-accessbuttons(navigation,music,home,andback)surroundingitandavolumeknobadjacent,eventhoughchangingstationsisamulti-stepprocess.Thelackoftouchfunctionalitycouldbeacomplaintforsome,butwedon'tmissit.AndbothAppleCarPlayandAndroidAutocomestandard.
TheMazda3alsogetsaclean7.0-inchdigitalinstrumentclusterthatdisplaysthingslikenavigationandmusic,butitisn'tasintuitiveorconfigurableassomeothers.Thehead-updisplay(standardonourPremiumtester)picksupmostoftheslack,projectingthingslikespeedandsafetysystemdisplaysaswellasmusicandnav.AndtheBose12-speakeraudiosystemisprettybangin'.Theonlyflaw–andit’saminorone–isthatyouhavetopayextrafornavigation($450)onthetop-trimmodel.

Mazda'sadaptivecruisecontrolwithlane-keepassistmakestraffictolerable.Thecarstayscenteredinthelane–there'snoping-ponging–andadaptivecruisecontrolbrakessmoothlyallthewaydowntozero.Ouronlyrealsafetycomplaintisthebackupcamera,whichonlytakesupabouthalfofthe8.8-inchscreen,forsomereason.
Toyota:TheCorollaHatchbackalsocomeswithalonglistofstandardactivesafetyequipment.ItgetsToyotaSafetySense2.0standardonalltrims,whichincludesautomaticemergencybrakingwithpedestriandetection,lane-departurewarningwithsteeringassist,automatichigh-beamassist,adaptivecruisecontrolwithstop-and-go,andevenroad-signrecognition.Oddly,though,theXSEmodellosesadaptivecruisecontrolwithfullstop-and-gofunctionality;theXSE'sadaptivecruisecontrolshutsoffatspeedsofunder32mph.
Still,ToyotaSafetySenseisgreat.Theadaptivecruisecontrolandlane-keepassistworkwellonthehighway,holdingthecarcenteredandatasafedistancetothevehicleinfrontofit.ThesystemcanevennavigatetheCorollaaroundtrickierturnswithnegligibleinputfromthedriver.ButwhileToyota'ssafetysystemisprobablyequaltoMazda'ssetupfunctionallyspeaking,theCorollaXSE'slackoffullstop-and-gocruisecontrolisdamning.
Efficiency
Mazda:TheMazda3isoneoftheleastefficientcarsintheclass–ourall-wheel-drivetesterespecially.Thefive-doorgetsjust24milespergalloncity,32highway,and27combined.Thefront-drivemodelgetsaslightlybetter30mpgcombined,butthesenumbersarestillbelowthecompetition.Forexample,theloneall-wheel-drivealternative,theSubaruImpreza,returnsupto31mpgcombined.
Toyota:TheCorollaHatchbackhasmuchbetterfueleconomythantheMazda.Intherightspec,it’sactuallythemostfuel-efficientcarintheclass.Ourfront-driveXSEtestergets30milespergalloncity,38highway,and33combined.ThebaseCorollaHatchbackSE,meanwhile,getsupto36mpgcombined.

Verdict
Ifyou'reinthemarketforahatchback,thesearetwoofthebest(nottomentiontwooftheonly).Whilesomecompaniesarefocusedonsubcompactcrossoversalmostexclusively,it'srefreshingtoseethatMazdaandToyotastillcareaboutthetriedandtruefive-door.
ButwhiletheCorollaHatchbackiscomfortable,efficient,andgenerallywellpriced–anditlooksprettycoolintheXSEtrim–theMazda3isthebettervehicleofthetwo.TheMazdalooksnicer,hasamoreupscalecabin(evenifitisseverelycramped),andevenoffersmoresafetyequipmentandbettertechnologyoutofthebox.Youwillhavetopayabitmore–butifyouwantthebesthatchbackonsaletoday,theMazda3isit.
