Theroboticsystemwillbeverifyingtheintegrityoftheinfrastructureusingcamerasandsensorsandwillallowoperatorstointervenewithpreventivemaintenanceactionsthroughdataprocessingalgorithms.

Genoa,Brescia,29July2020-Theconstructionandassemblyoftherobots,oneoftheirkindintheworld,whichwillbehelpingtomaketheGenoaSanGiorgioBridgesafe,hasbeencompleted.Thedevices,designedbyIstitutoItalianodiTecnologia(IIT)andbuiltbytheCamozziGroup,commissionedbytheTemporaryAssociationofCompaniesestablishedbySeastemaS.p.A.andCetenaS.p.A.(FincantieriGroup),willbecontributingtothesafetyofthenewbridgeinGenoaregularlyperforminganautomaticmonitoringoftheinfrastructurebyusingcamerasandsensors.The4robots-2InspectionRobotsand2WashingRobots-willbeoperationalnextautumn,assoonastheinstallationsservicingthesystemhavebeencompleted.

Theroboticsystemisbasedontheinstallationofthe4robotsonthesidesofthebridge:2ofthemwillbeinchargeofinspectingthelowersurfaceofthedeckandprocessingthedatainordertofindanyanomalies(Robot-Inspection)andtheother2willbecleaningthewindbarriersandsolarpanels(Robot-Wash).Thisroboticinspectionsystemisthefirstautomaticsystemintheworldandprovidesareplicablemodelatthegloballeveldesignedtoenhancethesafetyofthistypeofinfrastructureandofanycivilworksthatmayrequireautomaticmonitoring.

The4robotsaremadeofcarbonfibrestructures,actuatorsandelectroniccomponents.Inparticular,thesingle-piecebeamsthatwillenabledeckinspectionhavebeenmadebytransposingtechnologiesthataretypicaloftheaerospaceandaeronauticalindustriesandwerebuiltusing3Dmouldscreatedbythetechnologyofthelargest3DprinterintheworldmadebytheCamozziGroup,theMasterprintTMmachine.

Therobotswillbeslidingoverthebridge’souterrailswheretheywillallowoperatorstoverifytheinfrastructure’sintegritysendingtheimagesanddataacquiredtoacontrolroom,therebycreatingadigitaldatabasethat,thankstoefficientanalysisandpredictionalgorithms,willallowtheoperatorstointervenewithpreventivemaintenanceactions,asrequired.

Therobots,designedusingIIT’sknow-howinthefieldofindustrialrobotics,werebuiltthankstotheten-yearexperienceoftheCamozziGroupinproductiontechnologiesandintheconstructionofsophisticatedmachineryemployedintheaeronauticalandaerospaceindustries.Successwasachievedonlyduetothesynergiescreatedbythevariousenterprisesinvolvedinbuildingaroboticsystemthatischaracterizedbyreducedweight,highstructuralstiffnesstobearthesensors’weight,lowresistancetowindandgoodaestheticquality.TherobotswillbeoperatedfromthecontrolroomviaaWi-Finetwork.Theyarepoweredbybatteriesandchargingstationshavebeenspacedevery200metersonthesidesofthebridge.

Furthermore,intheeventofadverseenvironmentalconditionstherobotsarecapableofinterruptingoperationsandcansafelyreachtheirchargingstationsthankstotheanemometersandaccelerometerswithwhichtheyareequipped.

Thesystemcombinesthestrengthsofautomationinmodernmechatronicmechanisms,anareawhereCamozzihasaconsiderableexperience(especiallyinconjunctionwithindustrialautomation),withtheautonomyofcognitivesystems.Inessence,aninspectionsystemthatusescompletelyindependent“cognitivemechatronics”,whichthankstothefourrobotswillbeoperatinginadditiontothecontrolandmaintenanceactivitiesalreadyrequiredbylaw.Moreover,thankstoitshardwareandsoftwareversatility,thesystemcanbeimplementedinthefuturewithnewtechnologiesinsuchawayastoalwaysbecuttingedge.

TheRobots

ThecontrolsystemconsistsoftwoRobotInspectionandtwoRobotWashwhichwillbemovingonthelowerexternalpartsofthebridge.

ARobotInspectionweighsover2,200kgandisequippedwith82wheelsusedformovingalongtwoaxesandisover7meterswide.Itisprovidedwitharetractablearmforinspectionconsistingofafixedpartandamobilepart,bothofwhichincarbonfibre.Thearmhasareachofabout17metersintotallengthsothatitcantouchthecentreofthedeckfromtheedgeofthebridge.Theexternalmonitoringofthedeckwillbecarriedoutpreciselybymeansofthecarbonfibrearm,whichiscapableofslidingalongtheentirelengthofthebridgeretractingnearthepylons;high-resolutioncamerasandsensorshavebeeninstalledonittomeasuresurfaceconditions:i.e.paintdeterioration,corrosionelementsandstateofthewelds.Thecameraswillbetransmittingimagesoftheentireinfrastructureinrealtime.Thankstocomputationalmodels,thedatacollectedwillbecheckedforthepurposeofreportinganyirregularitiesoranomalies.

ARobot-Washweighsabout2,000kgandhas56wheelstodistributeitsloadonthebridgeedge;itisover3.5metershigh,almost8meterslongandisdividedintotwoparts:oneforcleaningandoneforcharging.TheWashingRobotremovesdustandotherdebrisfromthephotovoltaicsystemandglasswindbarriers,whichdemarcatethelanestherebymaintainingtheinfrastructure’sefficiencyandfunctionality.Oneoftherobot’speculiarfeaturesisitssustainableuseofwaterresources.Thewaterusedforwashingthestructuresoriginatesfromrainandothercondensationwatercollectedfromthesameinfrastructure.TheWashingRobotisequippedwithsensorsthatmonitorboththetransparencyoftheglasswindbarriersandtheamountofwaterfoundonthesurfaces.Thesetwoparametersallowtherobottodeterminewhentointerveneinordertocleanthesurfaces.Incaseofwatershortageduetodroughtsandperiodsoflowhumidity,theWashingRobotisprovidedwithablowerfortheremovalofparticulatestherebycontributingtomaintainingtheinfrastructure’sefficiencywhilewaitingfortherightamountofmeteoricwatertobeusedforamorethoroughwash.

Thetworobotswillberegularlytravellingalongtheedgeofthebridgeviatracksanddrivewheelsalongtheentirelengthoftheviaductofapprox.1,100meters,dependingonweatherconditions.

TheRoleofIIT

Theprojectoriginatedfromanarchitecturalproposalofthefirm“RenzoPianoBuildingWorkshop”,whichIstitutoItalianodiTecnologiatransposedandexpandedin2018bydesigningauniqueroboticsystemprototype,laterdevelopedindustriallybyCamozzi.IITdonatedtheprojecttotheCityofGenoaandcreatedateamofpioneeringcompaniesforitsimplementation,includingtheCamozziGroup.

PartnershipbetweentheCamozziGroupandIstitutoItalianodiTecnologia(IIT)

ThepartnershipwithIITstartedinJune2017withtheestablishmentofaJointLab,whichinitiallyfocusedonnewmaterialsandadvancedrobotics.Thepartnershiphasnowexpandedinseveraldirections,theconstructionoftherobotsbeingoneofthefruitsofitsprogress.

CamozziAutomationistheleaderofanadvancedautomationprojectthathaswonthe“OpenInnovation”calloftheLombardyRegion,ofwhichtheresultswillbepresentedinlivestreamingon20July.

Thecall,createdaccordingtoPORFESR2014-2020,thereforewiththehelpofresourcesfromtheEuropeanUnion,theItalianStateandtheLombardyRegion-aimsatstrategicprojectsofresearch,developmentandinnovationthatareabletoenhancetheecosystemsofLombardy,facilitatingtherelationshipsbetweencompaniesandacademia,thetransferoftechnologyaswellastheuseofnewtechnologies.

Outof78applicationssubmittedbypoolsofhigh-profileorganisations,33projectshavebeenadmittedtoregionalfunding,amountingtoatotalof114,5million€.

Theinitiativeinvolvesinparticularthoseproductionsectorsthatarecharacterisedbylowstandardisedproduction,withastrongcomponentofmanualwork,suchasaeronautics,boatingandaerospace,renewableenergy,construction,largeindustrialplants,largeinfrastructures...

Thedevelopmentofadvancedautomationinthesesectorswillallow:

Asafurtherimprovementoftheworkingconditions,theprojectalsoincludesthereductionofnoiseinmachinetoolsthankstotheintroductionofinnovativevibrationdampingsolutionsliketheANC(ActiveNoiseControl)andAVC(ActiveVibrationControl)techniques.

TheprojectwillallowtoacquireimportantknowledgeandskillsontheirindustrialusebyguaranteeingsupporttoasignificantbusinesstargetthatstandsforthesysteminLombardy,increasingtheopportunitiesforcooperationbetweencompaniesandtheresearchsystem.

The33projectsselectedbytheCallHub“ResearchandInnovation”oftheLombardyRegionwillbepresentedonMonday20Julyinlivestreamingat10:00.

TheCallHub“ResearchandInnovation”,financedbytheLombardyRegion,supportssevenecosystemswithatotalcontributionof114,5million€:Sustainability,HealthandLifeScience,AdvancedManufacturing,ConnectivityandInformation,SmartMobilityandArchitecture,CultureandKnowledge,Nutrition.

FI5isjustoneinaseriesofinitiativessetupbyFerrariandIIT.Overthepastfewweeks,theMaranellocompanyhaslaunchedvariouscoronavirushealthcareprojects,includingdirectfinancialsupportfortheModenaarea,aswellastheproductionofvalvesforpulmonaryrespiratorsandfittingsforprotectivemasks,aswellasthe“BackonTrack”programme,bornoutofthecollaborationwithapoolofvirologistsandexperts,withthesupportoftheEmiliaRomagnaarea,withtheaimofensuringthesafetyofthecompany’sworkingenvironment,asfromthemomentproductionrestartedlastweek.

HowdidtheideaofFI5comeaboutItbeganwithacallfromIIT,andadesiretomakegenerallyavailabletoeveryonegoingthroughthisemergencyinItalyandindeedintherestoftheworld,notonlytheexcellentproductionfacilitiesandsupportforthemanyinitiativesintheareaputinplacebyFerrari,butalsothecreativity,quickreactiontimesandknow-howthatarepartoftheDNAofaFormula1teamliketheScuderia.

FI5hasbeendesignedtomeetthetypicaldemandsofmediumintensivecare;reliable,versatile,easytouseandassemble,abletooptimiseoxygenconsumptionandbeingproducedinvolume,usingeasilyavailablematerials,soastohaveafarlowercostthancurrentlyavailablepulmonaryventilators.ThetechnicalspecificationofFI5,thedrawings,thefirmware,softwareandlistofcomponentsarenowavailableasanopensourceproject,whichmeansanyonecanproduceit.Infact,someItalian,MexicanandUnitedStatescompanieshavealreadycontactedFerrariandIITtomoveontocertifyinganddistributingtheproduct.IIT,throughconnectionstoallEuropeanresearchcentres,willputtheprojectontheDIH-HEROnetwork,usedforrobotictechnologiesinhealthcare.

InvolvedintheprojectwastheScuderiaworkinggroup,headedupbySimoneResta,HeadofChassisEngineeringandCorradoOnorato,F1InnovationManager,withsupportfrommembersoftheGestioneSportivaandtheGTdepartment,whileIITputtogetheraresearchandengineeringteamcoordinatedbyMarcoMaggiali,FacilityCoordinatorIcubTechandAndreaPagnin,IIT’sresearchmanager.Initially,theycameupwithalistofessentialrequirements,partlyarrivedatthankstotheexperiencegatheredfromvarioushospitals,includingMilan’sNiguardaHospitalandthePoliclinicoSanMartinoHospitalinGenoa.TheCamozziGroupalsoplayedavitalroleinidentifyingsomeessentialcomponents,alsoexperimentingwithitsownproductsinordertoprovidedatausefulforthesimulationmodels.

Therewerefivephasestotheproject,fromdesigntosimulationtothechoiceandsupplyofcomponentstotheproductionandtestingoftheprototype.TheScuderia’sengineersdidtheCADdesignwork,todefinethepneumaticandmechanicalpartsanddynamicsimulation.IITsourcedallthematerialsanddesignedtheelectronics,thefirmwareandthecontrolsoftware,alsoplayingitspartinthesimulation,developmentanddesignofthewiringsystemandalsomadeuseoftheScuderia’ssupplychain.Alltheworkwascarriedoutwitharigorousrespectoftheprocesslogic,ensuringcompliancewiththenecessaryrequirementsintermsofsafetyandreliability,sothatitcouldbeeffectivelyusedinthefield.
