TheMinistryofEducationhasreportedasuspectedcheatingincidentinanimportantexamontheweekendtothepublicsecurityauthoritiesandwillcrackdownonanycheatinginexams,accordingtotheministry’smicroblogonDec27.
ThepostcameafteranonymousInternetusersallegedthatsomequestionsandanswersontheNationalPostgraduateEntranceExamination,whichwasheldonDec26andDec27,werereleasedinadvance.
TheInternetuserspostedscreenshotsfromsocialnetworkingappsshowingquestionsandanswersthatweregoingtobeontheexam.
Theministrysaidinthepostthatithadnotoleranceforcheatingandhadaskedpublicsecuritydepartmentstoconductaninvestigation.
“Thosewhodisrupttestingandharmtheequityofeducationbycheatingwillgetthepunishmenttheydeserve,”theministrysaid.
AccordingtoanewlyamendedChineseCriminalLaw,thosewhoorganize,assistorareinvolvedincheatingduringnationalexamscouldbesentencedtothreetosevenyearsinprison.
Asthefirstgraduateschoolentranceexamaftertheamendment,theexamontheweekendwasdubbedbyInternetusersas“theonesupervisedthemoststrictly”.
Asanationalexamwithmorethan1milliontesttakerseveryyear,theNationalPostgraduatesEntranceExaminationisveryimportantforstudents’academiclife,andcheatingincidentshavebeenexposedfromtimetotime.

StatisticsfromtheMinistryofEducationshowedthat1.77millionstudentsregisteredfortheNationalPostgraduateEntranceExaminationfor2016,whichwasheldovertheweekend,markingthefirstriseaftertwosuccessivedecreases.
ChenZhiwen,editor-in-chiefofeol.cn,aleadingeducationportalinChina,saidtakingtheexamandattendingmaster’spro-gramshavemaintainedtheirpopularityamongChinesestudentsasaresultofChina’scurrenteconomyandemploymentsituation.
“ThenumberofcollegegraduatesinChinahaskeptgrowing,andgraduateshavefounditincreasinglydifficulttolandagoodjob.ThesefactorshavedrivenlargenumbersofstudentstotaketheNationalPost-graduateEntranceExaminationandpursuefurthereducationoncampus,”Chensaid.
Accordingtoasurveyof38,000studentsbyeol.cn,43percentsaidtheychosetotaketheexamtoaddtotheircompetitivenesswhenjobhunting.
Thesurveyalsofoundthat60percentofregisteredtesttakersthisyearwerefemaleand40percentmale.Businessadministration,accountingandfinancecontinuedtobethemostpopularprograms.
